| Building a New Program Around the Spectrum Center Method |
Over the last few years we at the Spectrum Center have worked with hundreds
of children administering the listening training program developed by Alfred
Tomatis. While the results have been extremely gratifying, they at the
same time seem to pose a further challenge and opportunity for us as therapists.
As you might know, Tomatis was an Ear Nose and Throat man in France.
The son of opera singers, Alfred Tomatis himself treated opera singers
at the early part of his career. It was through this principle that he
formulated the principle that the voice can only sing what the ear hears.
This has become known as the "Tomatis Effect".
As one of the original founders of the Spectrum Center, Valerie Dejean's
background was somewhat different. Trained as an occupational therapist
of the "sensory integration" school, Ms Dejean has employed additional
therapies to her clients at the same time that they had their earphones
on and were receiving the listening training.
